Outer Banks Beach Fire Regulations

Permit
Permits are issued for fires from the Town of Nags Head or Cape Hatteras National Park. We will provide you with a digital copy of your permit to have easy access to at the beach fire. You must have this digital copy of the permit on you and available to show a ranger.

Time
Beach Fire permits are only issued after 5:30PM EST and are good until 12AM, Midnight, that night. The permit is only good for one day.

Wind
The wind must be under 11.5MPH in order to obtain a beach permit. If the wind exceeds this the beach fire is to be extinguished.

Size
The fire must be in a pit no larger than 3 feet in diameter and not less than 1 foot in depth and must remain within the confines of the pit.

Location
There are designated areas where beach fires are permitted on the Outer Banks, including Nags head and Cape Hatteras National Park. If you are not staying oceanfront, a beach access name will be needed along with the address of your stay.

Proximity
The beach fire must be 50 feet from any combustible materials including but not limited to buildings, life guard stands, sea grass, brush, etc.

Supervision
The beach fire has to be supervised by an adult 14 years or older, who must attend the fire and see that it is completely extinguished prior to leaving the site. A driver’s license and number are required for the permit.

Extinguishing
The fire will be completely extinguished with water and all debris removed from the beach area after the fire is completely out.

Materials
We will provide wood for your fire. Only leaves, branches or other plant growth can be burned, nothing else. It is illegal to burn trash, lumber scraps or other non-vegetative material.
